abstract = {In this paper, a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is considered where the baseband units form a pool of computational resource units (RUs) and are separated from the remote radio heads (RRHs). The RRHs are grouped into clusters based on their capacity in radio RUs. Each RRH serves different service-classes whose calls have different requirements in terms of radio and computational RUs and follow a compound Poisson process. This means that calls arrive in batches while each batch of calls follows a Poisson process. If the RUs’ requirements of an arriving call are met, then the call is accepted in the serving RRH for an exponentially distributed service time. Otherwise, call blocking occurs. We initially start our analysis with a single-cluster C-RAN and model it as a multiservice loss system, prove that the model has a product form solution, and determine time and call congestion probabilities via a convolution algorithm. Furthermore, the previous model is extended to include the more complex case of many clusters of RRHs.},

abstract = {Advances in the fields of networking, broadband communications and demand for high-fidelity low-latency last-mile communications have rendered as-efficient-as-possible relaying methods more necessary than ever. This paper investigates the possibility of the utilization of cellular-enabled drones as aerial base stations in next-generation cellular networks. Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) acting as clusters of deployable relays for the on-demand extension of broadband connectivity constitute a promising scenario in the domain of next-generation high-availability communications. Matters of mobility, handover efficiency, energy availability, optimal positioning and node localization as well as respective multi-objective optimizations are discussed in detail, with their core ideas defining the structure of the work at hand. This paper examines improvements to the existing cellular network core to support novel use-cases and lower the operation costs of diverse ad hoc deployments.},

abstract = {We present analytical results on the bit-error probability (BEP) of arbitrary order pulse-position modulation (PPM) of optically pre-amplified receivers. We use the Laguerre photon counting distribution so as to model the statistic of the optical noise, in order to accurately model the effects of signal and spontaneous noise beating at the optical detector. The great advantage of our proposed results is that they are exact and only require a finite summation over the optical noise modes and the modulation order. In addition, this approach enables the efficient calculation of the BEP in optical wireless communication links, under the presence of atmospheric scintillations and pointing errors.},

abstract = {In this paper we study a mobility-aware call admission control algorithm in a mobile hotspot. To this end, a vehicle is considered which has an access point with a fixed capacity. The vehicle alternates between stop and moving phases. When the vehicle is in the stop phase, it services new and handover calls by prioritizing them via a probabilistic bandwidth reservation (BR) policy. Based on this policy, new handover calls may enter the reservation space with a predefined probability. When the vehicle is in the moving phase, it services new calls only. In that phase, two different policies are considered: (a) the classical complete sharing (CS) policy, where new calls are accepted in the system whenever there exists available bandwidth, and (b) the probabilistic BR policy. Depending on the selected policy in the moving phase, we propose the probabilistic BR loss model (if the CS policy is selected) and the generalized probabilistic BR loss model (if the probabilistic BR policy is selected). In both stop and moving phases, where the call arrival process is Poisson, calls require a single bandwidth unit in order to be accepted in the system, while the service time is exponentially distributed. To analytically determine call blocking probabilities and the system’s utilization, we propose efficient iterative algorithms based on two-dimensional Markov chains. The accuracy of the proposed algorithms is verified via simulation.},

abstract = {In this paper, a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is considered where the baseband units form a pool of computational resource units and are separated from the remote radio heads (RRHs). Based on their radio capacity, the RRHs may form one or many clusters: a single cluster when all RRHs have the same capacity and multi-clusters where RRHs of the same radio capacity are grouped in the same cluster. Each RRH services the so-called multiservice traffic, i.e., calls from many service classes with various radio and computational resource requirements. Calls arrive in the RRHs according to a quasi-random process. This means that new calls are generated by a finite number of mobile users. Arriving calls require simultaneously computational and radio resource units in order to be accepted in the system, i.e., in the serving RRH. If their requirements are met, then these calls are served in the (serving) RRH for a service time which is generally distributed. Otherwise, call blocking occurs. We start with the single-cluster C-RAN and model it as a multiservice loss system, prove that the model has a product form solution, and determine time congestion probabilities via a convolution algorithm whose accuracy is validated with the aid of simulation. Furthermore, the previous model is generalized to include the more complex case of more than one clusters.},

abstract = {Real-time event detection and targeted decision making for emerging mission-critical applications require systems that extract and process relevant data from IoT sources in smart spaces. Oftentimes, this data is heterogeneous in size, relevance, and urgency, which creates a challenge when considering that different groups of stakeholders (e.g., first responders, medical staff, government officials, etc.) require such data to be delivered in a reliable and timely manner. Furthermore, in mission-critical settings, networks can become constrained due to lossy channels and failed components, which ultimately add to the complexity of the problem. In this article, we propose PrioDeX, a cross-layer middleware system that enables timely and reliable delivery of mission-critical data from IoT sources to relevant consumers through the prioritization of messages. It integrates parameters at the application, network, and middleware layers into a data exchange service that accurately estimates end-to-end performance metrics through a queueing analytical model. PrioDeX proposes novel algorithms that utilize the results of this analysis to tune data exchange configurations (event priorities and dropping policies), which is necessary for satisfying situational awareness requirements and resource constraints. PrioDeX leverages Software-Defined Networking (SDN) methodologies to enforce these configurations in the IoT network infrastructure. We evaluate our approach using both simulated and prototype-based experiments in a smart building fire response scenario. Our application-aware prioritization algorithm improves the value of exchanged information by 36% when compared with no prioritization; the addition of our network-aware drop rate policies improves this performance by 42% over priorities only and by 94% over no prioritization.},

abstract = {Numerous middleware application programming interfaces (APIs) and protocols were introduced in the literature in order to facilitate the application development of the Internet of Things (IoT). Such applications are built on reliable or even unreliable protocols that may implement different quality-of-service (QoS) delivery modes. The exploitation of these protocols, APIs and QoS modes, can satisfy QoS requirements in critical IoT applications (e.g., emergency response operations). To study QoS in IoT applications, it is essential to leverage a performance analysis methodology. Queueing-network models offer a modeling and analysis framework that can be adopted for the IoT interactions of QoS representation through either analytical or simulation models. In this paper, various types of queueing models are presented that can be used for the representation of various QoS settings of IoT interactions. In particular, we propose queueing models to represent message-drop probabilities, intermittent mobile connectivity, message availability or validity, the prioritization of important information, and the processing or transmission of messages. Our simulation models demonstrate the significant effect on delivery success rates and response times when QoS settings are varied.},

Calls arrive in the link according to a Poisson process, have an initial (peak) bandwidth requirement while their service time is exponentially distributed. We model this system as a multirate loss system and analyze two different multirate loss models. In the first model, named probabilistic retry loss model, if there is no available link bandwidth, a new call is blocked but retries with a lower bandwidth requirement and increased service time. To allow for the fact that a blocked call may be impatient, we assume that it retries with a probability. In the second model, named probabilistic threshold loss model, a call may reduce its bandwidth requirement (before blocking occurs) based on the occupied link bandwidth. To determine call blocking probabilities in both multirate loss models, we show that approximate but recursive formulas do exist that provide quite satisfactory results compared to simulation.},

A cluster includes RRHs that have the same radio resource unit capacity. In addition, all RRHs are separated from the common pool of computational resource units named baseband units. Each RRH accommodates calls whose arrival process can be random, quasi-random, or even bursty. The latter is modeled according to the compound Poisson process where calls arrive in the C-RAN in the form of batches whose size (in calls) is generally distributed. An arriving call requires a radio and a computational resource unit so as to be accepted in the C-RAN. If at least one of these units is not available, the call is blocked. To analyze the proposed multi-cluster C-RAN we model it as a loss system, show that the steady-state probabilities have a product form solution and propose an algorithm for the computation of congestion probabilities. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified via simulation.},

The analytical description enables the efficient calculation of the ABEP in Malaga-M, γ - γ and negative-exponential fading for a wide range of modulation orders and noise modes. As expected, a significant power budget gain is initially obtained by increasing the PPM modulation order, however a further improvement requires the optimization of the received beam waist.
