We use the Laguerre photon counting distribution so as to model the statistic of the optical noise, in order to accurately model the effects of signal and spontaneous noise beating at the optical detector. The great advantage of our proposed results is that they are exact and only require a finite summation over the optical noise modes and the modulation order. In addition, this approach enables the efficient calculation of the BEP in optical wireless communication links, under the presence of atmospheric scintillations and pointing errors.},

The analytical description enables the efficient calculation of the ABEP in Malaga-M, γ - γ and negative-exponential fading for a wide range of modulation orders and noise modes. As expected, a significant power budget gain is initially obtained by increasing the PPM modulation order, however a further improvement requires the optimization of the received beam waist. Finally, the noise modes that enter the receiver negatively affect its operation irrespective of fading and pointing errors.},

In this study, bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) is selected from a diverse range of DL algorithms to perform fiber channel modeling for on-off keying and pulse amplitude modulation 4 signals. Compared with the conventional model-driven split-step Fourier (SSF)-based method, the proposed method yields similar results based on the comprehensive comparison of multiple characteristics associated with the generated optical signals, including the optical amplitude and phase waveforms in the time domain, optical spectrum components in the frequency domain, and eye diagrams after detection in the electrical domain. Additionally, the effects of multiple factors on the modeled fiber channel have also be investigated, including fiber length, fiber nonlinearity, dispersion, data …

The results are in the form of a finite sum whose number of terms depends on the PPM modulation order and the noise modes of the amplifier, enabling the efficient calculation of the average PER. In addition, we utilized the presented analysis to evaluate the performance of a equal-gain-combining (EGC) diversity receiver that operates in conjunction with optical amplification and PPM. The results show that the utilization of diverse and relatively low PPM orders achieves a drastic reduction in the average PER.},

abstract = {It is considered hard to teach programming in secondary education while achieving the aims of curriculum. However, when teaching is supported by suitable methodologies, learning can be ameliorated. Under this premise, this paper discusses different teaching approaches to programming in secondary education and examines the potential benefit of sound-alerts as a complementary teaching tool. Such alerts were created by pairing different sound stimuli to specific programming actions and operations. Both the selection of the sound stimuli, as well as the potential impact of the use of sound alerts on programming are evaluated through subjective studies. Results showed that participants preferred synthesized to natural (pre-recorded) stimuli for all types of alerts. It was also revealed that users prefer sound-alerts associated to pending actions, errors, successful code execution, conditional statements and code looping over alerts highlighting the step-by-step execution of the code. Finally, the test results showed that students understand both the meaning and the use of code commands more clearly when they use a sound-enriched programming environment instead of a conventional one. These results were the motivation for the initial creation of an audio and voice messages’ data base and the initial design of a new comprehensive educational tool using sound.},

However, the plethora of different and usually proprietary interfaces provided by the manufacturers makes it difficult to build smart home and smart city applications that involve the concurrent remote management of multiple home appliances. In this work, we categorize the basic characteristics of the available intelligent home appliances and propose YANG models that describe these characteristics. The approximate results are obtained by combining a new mathematical formula that we derive for binary PPM and an existing formula that associates higher-order PPM PERs with their binary PPM counterpart. The approximate results are compared with the exact in weak, moderate, and strong turbulence, and it is demonstrated that they are in good agreement under all fading conditions. Moreover, the accuracy of the approximation improves with the optical signal-to-noise ratio and the number of diversity branches that are used, which correspond to implementation scenarios that are typically anticipated in practice.},

abstract = {The NEPHELE data center interconnection network relies on hybrid electro-optical top-of-rack switches to interconnect servers over multi-wavelength optical rings. The bandwidth of the rings is shared, and an efficient utilization of the infrastructure calls for co-ordination in the time, space, and wavelength domains. To this end, we present offline and incremental dynamic resource assignment algorithms. The algorithms are suitable for implementation in a software defined network control plane, achieving efficient, collision-free, and on demand capacity use. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithms can achieve high utilization and low latency in a variety of traffic scenarios that include hot spots and/or rapidly changing traffic.},

abstract = {We present novel analytical results on the optimal combiner (OC) for pre-amplified optical wireless receivers under chi-squared noise. The results show that the OC architecture that minimizes the average bit-error rate (BER) is determined by the level of the signal-spontaneous beating noise. Moreover, the OC provides increased gain to the diversity branches with the higher energies, up to the point where the beating noise becomes detrimental to the BER. The performance of the OC is simulated for practical receiver arrangements and it is shown that it performs better than the maximal-ratio and equal-gain combiners. The performance improvement amounts to an energy gain of less than 1 dB for implementations that utilize narrow optical filters and a modest number of diversity branches.

abstract = {In this study, the performance of underwater optical wireless communication systems employing spatial diversity and multi-pulse position modulation techniques is assessed. The effects of inter-symbol interference, oceanic turbulence and receiver noise are taken into account. Oceanic turbulence is modelled by the log-normal distribution which is regarded as an appropriate model for weak turbulence conditions. For the system under consideration, approximate analytical expressions for the average bit error probability are deduced. The impact of the number of transmitting and receiving apertures, the achievable data rate and the water type on system performance is also investigated. Various numerical results are presented that demonstrate the proposed analysis.},

In particular, the security verification is performed using a popular tool called Scyther. The considered security properties include secrecy and reachability. We also simulate a key leakage and show that some security claims in this case can be falsified.

abstract = {We consider a cell of certain capacity in a homogeneous wireless cellular network that accommodates new and handover calls from K service-classes and we assume that new calls follow a random or quasi-random process while handover calls follow a quasi-random process. The cell is analysed as a loss system. Calls are accepted in the cell based on a state-dependent bandwidth sharing policy. More precisely, if the number of in-service calls (new or handover) of a service-class exceeds a threshold (different for new and handover calls), then a new or handover arriving call of the same service-class is accepted in the cell with a predefined state-dependent probability. The proposed multirate loss model has a Product Form Solution (PFS) for the steady state probabilities. Based on the PFS, we propose a convolution algorithm for the accurate calculation of congestion probabilities. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified through simulation and is highly satisfactory.},

abstract = {We consider a reference cell of fixed capacity in a wireless cellular network while concentrating on next-generation network architectures. The cell accommodates new and handover calls from different service-classes. Arriving calls follow a random or quasi-random process and compete for service in the cell under two bandwidth sharing policies: 1) a probabilistic threshold (PrTH) policy or 2) the multiple fractional channel reservation (MFCR) policy. In the PrTH policy, if the number of in-service calls (new or handover) of a service-class exceeds a threshold (difference between new and handover calls), then an arriving call of the same service-class is accepted in the cell with a predefined state-dependent probability. In the MFCR policy, a real number of channels is reserved to benefit calls of certain service-classes; thus, a service priority is introduced. The cell is modeled as a multirate loss system. Under the PrTH policy, call-level performance measures are determined via accurate convolution algorithms, while under the MFCR policy, via approximate but efficient models. Furthermore, we discuss the applicability of the proposed models in 4G/5G networks. The accuracy of the proposed models is verified through simulation. Comparison against other models reveals the necessity of the new models and policies.},

abstract = {Underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) systems have recently received significant attention as an attractive solution for both research and commercial use because of their ability to provide high bandwidth communications over relatively short transmission spans along with their low operational cost. However, high absorption and scattering of optical transmission in the water limit the achievable range of underwater optical wireless links to only few metres. In this study, in an effort to increase the range and reliability of underwater optical wireless links, the authors propose to utilise semiconductor optical amplifiers at the receiver and discuss in a quantitative fashion the performance enhancements that can be achieved. After developing the required analytical framework, extensive numerical results are further provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme for different operating conditions. Specifically, assuming intensity modulation and direct detection schemes with on–off keying modulation, they evaluate the bit error rate of the proposed system configuration for different water types, link distances and forward error correction schemes. Performance evaluation results reveal that the use of optical amplification can significantly improve the quality of UWOC links.},
